### Things to consider before Calculating Asphalt

## What is Asphalt?

### Types of Asphalt

There are 6 different types of Asphalt;

### What is the use of Asphalt?

As asphalt is a cementitious, it is used to create a “block top” on the surface of roads and payments. However, for this, it needs to be properly mixed in hot condition with the sand, gravel, and any other binder to shape it.

Only 5% of Asphalt is added in 95% sand, gravel, and stones. This 5% acts like a binder to compact the rest 95%. This mixing is done when itis at a high temperature, usually boiling, thus it is called HMA as well.

Around 2.6 million pavements and roads as made of Asphalt (Tarmac). It is waterproof (except WMA), which is designed to absorb water. It is also used for sealing and roofing. Tennis courts are made of these Warm Mix Asphalt.

### What is the difference between ton, tonne, and matric ton?

To calculate the tons of asphalt need on square feet, you’ll need to consider the thickness and density of the layer.. Here’s the general formula:
Tons of Asphalt = (Square Feet * Thickness in inches * Density) / 12
Where:
Square Feet = area to cover
Thickness = desired Thickness (inches) of the layer.
Density = Density of the material in pounds per cubic foot.

To calculate the weight of asphalt needed for payment, you need the volume of asphalt and the density of asphalt. Get volume by multiplying length, width, and thickness.

There are 4050 pounds in 1 cubic yard and 1 ton weigh about 2000 pounds. Thus we can calculate cubic yard per tonne as 4050/2000 = 2 tons. This 1 cubic yard has 2 tonnes of Asphalt.

At 2’’ thickness, 1 tone of Blacktop can cover up to 24 sq meters. Thus 22 tonnes may cover up to 22 x 24 = 528 sq meter.

One ton of Asphalt can cover up to 80 square feet when applied at the rate of 2’’ depth on the surface. Thus 80 square feet can be covered by a ton of asphalt.

Since,
1 square yard = 9 square feet
So,
500 square yards = 500 * 9 = 4500 square feet
Given,
1 ton of asphalt can cover up to 80 square feet
So,
1 ton / 80 square feet = 0.0125 tons/square foot
So for 500 yards (4500 sq feet)
Total tons of asphalt = 0.0125 tons/square foot * 4500 square feet = 56.25 tons
How many yards are in 2800 square feet?
As
9 sq feet = 1 yard
2800 sq Feet = 2800/9 = 311.11 square yards
So, there are approximately 311.11 square yards in 2800 square feet.

The standard weight of Asphalt is 145 pounds per cubic foot. However, all this depends upon the density of the Asphalt under study.

The binder course is from 20 to 28 mm in size and thus require a thick layer. The layer of binder may range from 40 mm to 50 mm in thickness.
